So, being a refugee became an offense. The need of so many people to flee from the battlefields or from extreme poverty is confronted as a crime and concentration camps are created to imprison them. Against this upgrade of the already brutal policy of Fortress Europe, stands the existential need of the refugees and immigrants to move and live, as well as a solidarity movement throughout Greece.
Away from the residential region of Rafina, in the forest area of Perivolakia, in an abandoned summer camp of the municipality of Zografou which now operates as a concentration camp for refugees, approximately 80-100 refugees from Afghanistan and Syria, mainly mothers with children and unaccompanied minors, were placed under semi-confinement status. The administration and guard were undertook by military and police forces. Excluded, away from the town, they are allowed to come out until evening, whilst they are forbidden to receive any visit either from close relatives or solidaries. Excluded from any possibility of communication, since there is no permanent interpreter in the camp, as required, which makes useless even the presence of a military doctor. Excluded due to the lack of public transport to the city, the health center, the schools. They are already compelled to wait seven hours for the ambulance just to be transported to the emergency department of an Athens hospital for issues that the local health center would give a solution. Moreover, the low quality and low nutritional value of the meals prove that the funds of the UN and the EU are consumed between administrators and catering companies.
Facing these survival problems, the refugees put forward their demands for education of their children, for medical care, for an interpreter, for transportation in order to break their isolation. They demand human conditions of residence and board with the distribution of special funds from the UN and EU on themselves and not to organizations (NGOs etc.) that leave them only what is left over: the misery in the camps, the ghettos. They demand open borders and to stop the wars.
As solidaries we support all their demands and we fight together for a life with dignity, against a multispeed society where those refugees and migrants who will not be deported are doomed to form its new bottom. And this is what differentiates us from charity, our action is not limited outside the barbed wire of the ghetto. We do not want our fellow people confined in concentration camps and deportated back to places of poverty and war. For those who choose to stay here, the answer is not confinement or social exclusion. We want them near us, our neighbors, our co-workers with equal labor rights, with their children in the same schools as our children. Together to build communities of solidarity and struggle against barbarism and exploitation, beyond racial or other discriminations, coexisting with our different cultures.
We call every solidary at the meeting of our Initiative with the refugees of our region, outside the refugee camp in Perivolakia Rafinas (former camp of the Zografou municipality) on Sunday 18/9/2016, at 6 pm, to discuss with them the continuation of our solidarity movement and the promotion of their demands.
